Stable Isotope Laboratory

The isotope laboratory is equipped with a VG 336 Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer (TIMS) dedicated to the analysis of the isotopes of boron (11B/10B). Samples are analyzed for research projects or commercial applications.

Acceptable Samples:

·          Analysis will require approximately 100 micrograms of boron.

·          Water samples are considered to be the standard medium for routine analysis.

·          Solids will require special preparation and must have prior approval.

Submitting a Sample:

·    Water samples should be filtered through a 0.45 micron effective pore diameter cellulose acetate filter, placed in plastic bottles, with small headspace, un-acidified, labeled, and shipped in a well protected container.

·     No preservation is required, e.g. chilling, acid, or biocides.
